Who is this course for?
This is the course for those who are required to have a recognised First Aid Qualification in the workplace in Ireland.
This course is recognized by the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) and TUSLA and is the course required by those who wish to be designated first aiders in the workplace.
Who needs this course?
- Anyone who is responsible for being the first aider in the workplace.
- Anyone who wishes to gain valuable knowledge for use at home.
- To arm people with the knowledge and skills needed to assist the injured or ill at any given time or place.
Training Objectives
To provide First Aid in the workplace including the legal requirements and the role of the First Aider
On completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Display relevant skills in the delivery of a first aid response
- Help individuals suffering sudden medical emergencies
- Provide basic First Responder cover before the Emergency Services arrive on scene.
- Provide first aid in the workplace as well as many other areas
Course Syllabus:
- Module 1: Patient Assessment
The emphasis in this lesson is on Primary Survey, Secondary Survey, Catastrophic Bleeding, Mechanism of Injury, Vital Signs, Signs & Symptoms, SAMPLE History.
- Module 2: Incident Procedure
The emphasis in this lesson is on the Roles & Responsibilities of the First Aid Responder, Scene Safety, PPE, Infection Control, Calling 999/112, Patient Confidentiality, the Continuum of Patient Care and Handover to EMS.
- Module 3: Cardiac First Response
The emphasis in this lesson is on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED), Heart Attack, Stroke and FAST Assessment. Adult and Infant choking.
- Module 4: Common Medical Emergencies
The emphasis in this lesson is on Inadequate breathing (Asthma), Low/high blood sugar (Diabetes), Seizures, Poisoning/overdose and Fainting.
- Module 5: Injury Management & Shock
The emphasis in this lesson is on Wounds & Bleeding, The Circulatory System, The Heart, External & Internal Bleeding, Bandaging & Dressing, Musculoskeletal Injuries, Shock, Care Management for Bleeding and the ‘Golden Hour’
- Module 6: Care of the Unconscious Patient
The emphasis in this lesson is on Altered Level of Consciousness (ALOC), the AVPU Scale, The Nervous System, Concussion & Compression, Care Management for Head Injury, Head/Neck/Spinal Immobilisation and Care Management for an Unconscious Patient.
- Module 7: Burns & Electrical Injury Care
Burns and scalds, chemicals, electric shock: causes and treatment of burns, electric shock & electrocution, poisoning.
- Module 8: Hypothermia & Hyperthermia
The emphasis in this lesson is on Body Temperature, the Causes of Hypothermia and Hyperthermia, signs & symptoms of Hypothermia and Hyperthermia and the Care Management for Hypothermia & Hyperthermia.
- Module 9: Information Management
The emphasis in this lesson is on why we record information, the Ambulatory Care Report (ACR), using a verbal handover report, filling out an ACR and carrying out a hand over to arriving EMS.
- Module 10: Communications
The emphasis in this lesson is on the types of communication, the barriers to effective communication, effective therapeutic communication, patient consent, handover and the patient care continuum.
- Module 11: The Well-Being of the First Aid Responder
The emphasis in this lesson is on the role & responsibilities of a First Aid Responder, emotional reactions, critical incident stress and its signs and symptoms and alleviating critical incident stress.
Course Assessment:
Learners are assessed on an ongoing basis throughout the course. These include both Formative Assessment & Summative Assessment.
Participants must complete the following:
- MCQ (multiple-choice questions) paper.
- FAR Skill sheets
Participants must achieve a pass mark of 60%, or greater, in each aspect of the assessment in order to qualify successfully.
Course Certification:
Successful completion of the First Aid Response course leads to certification. The Certificate is jointly Awarded by Rescue and Emergency care and The Pre Hospital Emergency Care Council (PHECC) and is valid for two years.
Recertification in First Aid Response is required every 2 years.

Any special needs/requirements should be identified at the time of booking. Participants should be dress in comfortable clothing that allows them to engage comfortably in the skills sections of the course such as CPR and the Recovery Position.
