Who should do this Course?
This course is ideal for those working in the Early Years Sector such as a Crѐche, Preschool, Montessori or Child Care Facility and those who care for children in their own home.
Training Objectives:
This course will be delivered by an Early Years Practitioner who is qualified as a QQI Manual Handling Instructor. This course will focus on the issues faced by those who work with children, with an emphasis on carrying out manual handling activities in a manner that reduces the risk of injury. It is a mandatory course for all staff who work in this sector.
Course Syllabus:
- The Legislation and Guidelines relating to Childcare Manual Handling.
- Manual Handling tasks in childcare including:
- How to handle inanimate and animate loads safely
- Movement in nappy changing area
- Working on the floor
- Working at low levels
- Bath/bed transfer
- Lifting a child
- Side to side transfer of child
- Walking a child
- The Anatomy and Physiology of the spine including relevant structure and
function in relation to Manual Handling. - Causes of mechanical back injury and Manual Handling related injuries.
- Safer Manual Handling techniques and the use of mechanical aids.
- Risk Assessment and Manual Handling Risk Factors.
- Appropriate Manual Handling systems of work for the individual’s
task, environment and equipment.
Course Assessment:
Theory test and a practical skills assessment of safe manual handling lifting, pushing, pulling, lifting and carrying.
Course Certification:
Certificate on successful completion valid for 2-3 years. Recommended recertification no more than 3 years.
Additional Information:
Any special needs / requirements should be identified at the time of booking. Participants should be advised to dress appropriately, due to the nature of the course, there will be manual skills.
Course Length: 3.5 hours
Maximum no. Participants: 12 per instructor
